Performs a variety of data control, input/output functions in support of ad hoc and production processing of jobs through mainframe, mini and micro computer systems. This is an entry, developmental level position within the production control family. The Production Control Assistant performs a number of routine and repetitive duties of a clerical and/or semi-skilled operative nature applying a basic knowledge of computing/operating systems concepts, practices and procedures to ensure the timely processing of source data and reports in support of a designated system(s). Incumbents generally work on relatively simple assignments, equipment and/or operating environments, referring to established procedures. Typically operates under immediate supervision. May work at client site. Errors have some, limited potential to cause delay, expense and/or disruption.

REPRESENTATIVE PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives, verifies, logs and prepares user jobs (magnetic tapes, etc.) for processing, referring to work request, production schedule, and established operating procedures. Performs various input control checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of job/data submitted.

Tracks/monitors status of job through computing process. Maintains appropriate logs. May respond to user inquiries and communicate with computing staff to expedite or clarify status.

May operate peripherals and other equipment to generate updated reports, e.g. transferring print files to laser printers, checking pageprint, etc.

Maintains various logs and counts. May run control totals and reconcile to ensure the completeness of totals before and after processing. May perform processing control to ensure input data matches information held on master files.

Collects and decollates reports and listings; reviews output products for legibility; verifies accuracy and completeness of runs and other associated products, e.g. verifies labeling of magnetic tapes, disks, etc. to standard format.

Distributes output, i.e., routes and ships as designated. May assist in preparing site storage copies.

May perform miscellaneous clerical and/or operations support functions, such as maintaining inventories and supplies, refilling printers and plotters, changing and labeling tapes, examining tapes for tears or other defects which could cause operating problems.
