Position Overview:
The Disaster Recovery Specialist is responsible for coordinating the development of advance arrangements and procedures to ensure the organization can respond to a disaster so that the critical business functions can be resumed within a defined time frame, the amount of loss can be minimized, and any stricken facilities can be repaired or replaced as quickly as possible. This responsibility includes coordinating the design, development, maintenance, and exercising (testing) of the overall IT disaster recovery plans for each critical functional area of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Provides continuous evaluation of business continuity risks, recovery strategies and current recovery capabilities for Information Technology (IT). Coordinates the development, testing, and maintenance of disaster recovery (DR) plans for and act as a single point of contact for various IT teams and business units in order to maintain customer relationships, ongoing assessment of needs, provide education and awareness, and support BC/DR exercises
  • Provides guidance to and coordinates the efforts of staff members in the development of recovery procedures for key areas of the organization. Analyzes environmental and equipment configurations for critical corporate resources; recommends disaster avoidance measures and improved backup capabilities. Periodically reviews changes in IT resources with the management of those areas to assure the effectiveness of the recovery procedures and backup capabilities.
  • Establishes disaster recovery testing methodologies; plans and coordinates the testing of recovery support and business resumption procedures in different functional areas. Assures that recovery procedures are effective for the restoration of key corporate resources and for the resumption of critical business processes.
  • Conducts disaster recovery training for staff members in all IT areas. Provides instructional and informational materials on how staff is expected to plan, adhere to DR change control processes and respond during an emergency. Develops and maintains standards and procedures for disaster recovery documentation and maintains a library of recovery support and resumption procedures.
  • Provides leadership and coordination during an actual event for our IT groups and leads virtual teams and provide leadership in the development of processes that minimize IT risks and restores IT capabilities during the event of a disaster. Identifies critical processes and functions, performs hands-on design, development, documentation, and test recovery plans.
  • Assists recovery support and business resumption staff during a disaster in the implementation of response and alternate operating strategies and acts as a coordinator during an emergency situation.
  • Works with vendors of disaster recovery services and facilities; studies and recommends outside services for use during a disaster situation and maintains contact with outside organizations participating in reciprocal agreements.
  • Works with management to ensure that as new equipment, facilities, services, and systems are installed that the disaster recovery issues are addressed.
  • Maintains contact with outside contingency planning professional organizations and local/regional emergency response groups.
  • Assures records required for recovery are identified and properly maintained in the Vital Records Program.

    This position requires the following knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationship with business partners, influence leadership team members, motivate partners and drive analysis of controls.
  • Working knowledge of all areas of the organization and the ability to develop a clear understanding of the company's key functional processes and resources.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current disaster recovery planning techniques and technologies as well as the methods used in performing risk analyses and business impact analyses.
  • Working knowledge of data processing and data / voice telecommunications in order to assist in the preparation of recovery procedures in this area.
  • Good project management skills. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the testing of emergency response, recovery support, and business resumption procedures.
