McGraw-Hill Professional has an exciting opportunity for a Project Development Editor - Medical based in our New York office. The Project Development Editor is responsible for development and editing of medical, nursing and allied health titles from manuscript through published books. The Project Development Editor, in collaboration with sponsoring editors and other team members, is responsible for ensuring the successful development, editing and production of specifically assigned print and nonprint/digital products. The editor will work closely with authors, editorial team members, production, marketing, and additional internal staff. Essential Accountabilities: Instruct authors regarding manuscript submission procedures and serve as author liaison from contract through manuscript delivery to publication on assigned titles. Review manuscripts (text, tables, figures, permissions) and give feedback to authors and sponsors regarding the quality of the submission. Work with authors and sponsors in reviewing manuscript status early in the editorial process, tracking each title on a weekly basis with the use of phone calls, e-mails, and logs detailing follow-up. Transmit a minimum of 10 titles per year into production and meet budgeted publication dates. Review editing of manuscript and work with full-service suppliers throughout the publication process. Instruct authors regarding proper permissions processes, check that permissions have been obtained, and alert the sponsor when permissions remain outstanding. Work with, train, and supervise freelance development editors and copyeditors to assist in meeting these goals. Plan editorial features and formats of books. Ensure that all projects meet approved specifications for length, number of illustrations, and other metrics. Prepare and log all assigned incoming manuscripts, figures, and tables for transmittal into production. Attend launch meetings, production meetings, and meetings with sponsors and managing editor as needed. BA or BS degree required. Must have 2 to 3 years of medical manuscript editing or textbook development experience. Able to work independently in a deadline-sensitive and fast-paced environment. Outstanding communication skills (both oral and written) required; this is critical for developing successful relationships with authors and all in-house departments. Must be detail oriented; requires simultaneous review and processing of manuscript and follow-up on many projects. Knowledge of AMA, APA, and Chicago Manual editorial styles needed; necessary for reviewing manuscript and editing for compliance to medical editorial style.
