General Function:

The Systems Administrators role is to optimize and/or maintain Windows servers and related components to achieve high availability and performance of the various business applications supported. This includes designing, installing, configuring, administering, and fine-tuning Windows operating systems and components across the organization in a timely and efficient manner. In addition to corporate computing duties, the System Administrator is in supervised control over vessel computers.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Coordinate, and participate in key process improvements for all Windows environments throughout the organization including servers, desktops and laptops.
2. Perform file system and database configuration and management.
3. Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems, including end user desktop PCs and enterprise data servers and vessel computers.
4. Ensure that Windows-based workstations and servers comply with established policies, standards, licensing agreements, and configuration guidelines.
5. Define and perform system backups and recovery procedures to ensure full data retrieval.
6. Monitor and test system performance; provide statistics and reports.
7. Recommend and execute modifications to Windows systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
8. Implement and maintain business computing policies, procedures, and technologies (including firewalls) to ensure Windows system security.
9. Review and deploy new Windows service packs, hot fixes, system updates, and vendor-supplied patches according to best practices.
10. Manage and/or provide guidance to vessel computing devices which includes updating and maintaining laptops, desktops and communication devices such as Nextel handhelds and satellite telephony.

Working- Relationships:

All departments with a primary focus on vessels

Out of Office interfaces with:

Computer equipment vendors such as CDW
Wireless telecommunication vendors such as Nextel and T-Mobile
Vessel software companies such as Nobeltec
Product specific support teams for computer software and hardware troubleshooting

Must support dockside boats occasionally - no fears of boats/ships.
Nextel and Satphones knowledge a plus.
