IT Manager position is characterized as an extremely “hands on” position in which the Manager deals directly with end users and equipment. .

Networking:

1. Solid understanding of Internet protocols including tcp/ip, dhcp, dns, routing, telnet, ftp, sftp, ssh. telnet, etc…
2. Ability to configure Cisco routers in a bridged environment with serial interfaces (T1’s) and fast ethernet interfaces. Solid understanding of Cisco access-lists on bridged virtual interfaces.
3. Understanding of Internet mail protocols and their impact on various client types such as desktops, laptops, smartphones, browsers.
4. Understanding of VPNs and associated security protocols.
5. Solid fundamental understanding of firewall configurations, particularly on Windows XP machines and routers.
6. Familiarity with CSU/DSU’s.
7. Solid understanding of wireless networking and their associated security risks.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with ISP’s, both T1’s and DSL providers.
9. Strong familiarity with Cisco switches and their capabilities.
10. Experience with networked multi-function printer / copier / scanner devices.

Operating systems:

1. Expert understanding of Windows platforms, primarily 2003 Server and XP.
2. Expert understanding of Active Directory, file and print services, windows based Mac shares, filenaming limitations between Macs and Windows.
3. Experience applying patches / service packs and troubleshoot problems that may result.
4. Familiarity with Mac OSX and their impact on Windows based networks.
5. Familiarity with IBM iSeries hardware and OS400.

Desktop Applications:

1. Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

3. Strong familiarity with all major browsers and their usual plugins, add-ons, limitations.
4. Strong understanding of all major email clients including Thunderbird, Outlook, browser based clients, etc…
5. Adobe products including Acrobat Pro and InDesign Creative Suite.
6. Ability to quickly learn new applications as necessary.
7. UPS and Fedex shipping applications.
8. Ability to stay up to date with service packs / patches and exercise proper judgment in determining whether or not they are required.

Server Applications:

1. Veritas BackupExec for Windows and all the associated agents including open file agents for Windows, Macs, SQL, and advanced disk based backup.
2. SQL Server.
3. Filemaker Pro Server 5.5
4. Norton Antivirus.
5. Microsoft Sharepoint Services 3.0.

Hardware:

1. Multi-processor Intel based servers.
2. Internal and external raid arrays.
3. DLT drives and autoloaders.
4. APC uninterruptible power supplies.
5. KVM switches.
6. Ethernet hubs, switches, and routers.
7. Dell desktops and laptops, HP Proliant servers.
8. Sprint PC cards.
9. HP, Dell, Ricoh, and Kyocera laser printers (color and monochrome).

End user interaction:

1. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with users of all levels (both technically and organizationally).

Vendor Management:

1. Experience dealing with ISP’s, particularly providers that provide email services.
2. Ability to effectively source equipment and services in a non-profit, tax exempt, academic environment.
3. Experience acquiring quotes and best pricing from all available sources.
4. Experience with technical support departments at various vendors including service providers such as CU, Verizon, Covad, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Cisco, etc…
5. Experience managing leased equipment and service contracts.
6. Experience dealing with third party developers and proprietary application vendors.

Staff:

1. Manage a staff of one.
