Sr. Unix/Linux Administrator in New York, NY

Our New York office is looking for a Senior UNIX/Linux Administrator to augment our infrastructure team. This individual would report to the department?s Director responsible for the POSIX group, and would share responsibility for management of the production and corporate infrastructure. This person should be highly self-motivated and capable of performing the daily responsibilities of the job with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 5 years in UNIX systems administration, preferably in a mission-critical Financial environment. The candidate should be able to demonstrate expertise with widely used concepts and technologies, especially those listed below. We want someone whose experience includes but is not limited to the major vendors (Sun, RedHat, IBM, HP, etc.), and who has exposure to environments that feature a wide variety of applications - database, web servers, application servers, packet filters, and the like. A candidate with experience building and troubleshooting an Oracle 9i/10g RAC cluster is a very big plus. Significant SAN experience is a very big plus. Experience with leveraging the Linux platform is a must. The ideal candidate should also have a solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, and should be able to perform basic network configuration and troubleshooting. This is a hands-on position that requires first-hand knowledge of implementing solid solutions. The position involves being on-call for support of the European market hours, and will regularly include off-hours maintenance and implementation work.

Qualifications

* A minimum of 5 years in the UNIX systems administration field, performing systems administration, design, analysis, implementation, and troubleshooting, preferably in the financial industry, and in an environment where security and availability are of very high importance
* This candidate should have expertise with: X11, ssh, rdist, sendmail and mailing systems, packet filtering concepts (netfilter), backups and restorations using various tools, NFS, DNS, NTP administration, and the like.
* An expert with Sun Solaris 9. Should be familiar with all aspects of administration and troubleshooting, performance tuning, unattended installation (should be very familiar with JumpStart). Should be familiar with the prominently used Sun technologies, including multipathing, Sun?s Solaris Volume Manager. Should be familiar with a wide variety of Sun hardware and its capabilities: varying storage types, interface types, and LOM/OOB management configurations. Should be familiar with Solaris-specific attributes, such as kernel tuning and status-gathering operations with ndd and mdb. You should be an expert with emergency intervention techniques, and should know immediately what to do if a failure/panic should occur.
* An expert with Linux, particularly RedHat. Should be familiar with all aspects of administration and troubleshooting, unattended installation (should be very familiar with PXE/Kickstart installations), prominently used NIC teaming technologies, RAID configuration, kernel tuning, etc. You should be an expert with emergency intervention on Linux/Intel-based systems.
* A detailed understanding and expertise with building and maintaining high-quality monitoring infrastructure. Experience with Nagios and other open-source tools a big plus. SNMP knowledge a must. This position will help us ensure that we are meeting the company?s business needs for failure and/or problem notification.
* A substantial understanding and exposure to Oracle database environments is required. This candidate should have experience with supporting and deploying Oracle databases, and should be familiar with the basic concepts of this software. Experience with Oracle 10g RAC cluster deployment and support is a big plus.
* Experience with shared storage systems (EMC, Sun arrays, or similar technologies - NAS/SAN) and clustering technologies is a must.
* Experienced with supporting end-users with basic usability needs. Assisting with the setup and use of cygwin/X, Windows ssh clients, and the like. This candidate should have good people skills.
* A detailed knowledge of and experience with development environments and tools, particularly compilers and source control methods, and the ability to assist with the process of troubleshooting build problems when necessary.
