Create a Whitepaper that will be published.
Working title: Programmer Productivity on Mainframe vs. Windows
We are looking for fresh insights into this story. By fresh, we mean that we've read almost everything published on the subject and want to provide original insights rather than retreads of previously published reports.
We're looking for an 8-12 page white paper. We have an outline that's been approved that must be followed.
The paper will cover:
. Programmer productivity on the mainframe versus on Windows - A discussion of how programmer productivity is defined and how to look at it quantitatively. For example:
o Time to do some defined task, number of programmers required to do a series of tasks, average number of programmers required to develop a new application, average number of lines of code produced by a programmer a month, or other criteria to be determined during envisioning and planning stage of white paper development.
o Suitability of the tool to the application context will be reviewed. Quantitative measures will be used to determine if the environment choice will impact development productivity, and end-user productivity using the final program product.
. The white paper will also contain an analysis of the tools which affect programmer productivity in the mainframe ecosystem vs. Windows (e.g. debuggers, scopes, available code libraries, third party controls, etc).
. The focus will be on how programmer productivity is perceived in the mainframe world rather than from a Windows programming perspective. This will undoubtedly include mainframe COBOL vs. Windows COBOL, though it is possible that other mainframe languages vs. Windows languages such as VB, etc. may be covered if this does not distract from the focus of the white paper.
In order to write this paper, we're expecting you to not only have good language skills, but to also have strong experience in the mainframe world, with experience actually dealing with the issues discussed. Reference to personal experience as well as published sources should be included.
The best candidates will have experience writing whitepapers or articles. We will be asking for a writing sample from applicants. Ideally, you should create a short summary of the project subject matter as the sample.
This is a short term engagement - we expect to conclude the project during the month of May 2006. You must therefore be ready to go immediately. If this paper is successful, we will probably have several more on this overall theme.
