Job Title: Database Administrator
Department/Division: Core Infrastructure Systems Support

Job summary:
Reporting to the DBA Manager this role will be working in a team environment with the common goal of providing world-class support for AP's applications. This individual must be willing to take the lead on application related
issues and projects, with an ability to recommend solutions for the same.
The DBA's role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all networked software and associated operating systems. The DBA will apply proven communication, analytical, and
problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments. The individual is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies
and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.
This is a complex environment requiring 24/7 365 days support. The candidate for this position must be willing (when needed) to work nights and weekends and be able to go beyond an eight hour day without notice.
Technical Environment
There are three data centers, currently two data centers based in the US and one principal international data center in the UK. The technical landscape is complex and heterogeneous. The systems at The Associated Press are a
mixture of UNIX and Microsoft based. Server environments exist in local offices and are supported both from US and International support teams and local technical teams.
Technical Requirements
* Four-year college diploma or university degree in computer science or software engineering and/or 5 years equivalent work experience.
* Must have 3+ years of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database administration experience in a 24/7 Windows Cluster environment; including new installs, upgrades, patch application, backup and recovery planning and
implementation, troubleshooting and problem resolution, and performance tuning.
* Must be self-motivated, methodical, require minimal direction, possess strong communication skills, and be a strong team player.
* Experience in implementing and managing maintenance plans.
* Be able to provide offsite remote support via VPN as needed.
* Must be able to install, configure, monitor and tune Windows Server 2000/2003 server in a Cluster environment
* Thorough knowledge of MS replication particularly transactional replication.
* Proficient in BCP and DTS
* Experience in writing and debugging stored procedures, index tuning, capable of reading a query execution plan, and utilizing tools such as SQL Profiler.
* Experience using Performance Monitor to optimize server performance
* Experiencing using monitoring tools such as OpenView, SiteScope or
Big Brother.
* Knowledge of "best practices" of DBA standards & procedures is a must, along with strong trouble-shooting skills and implementation of preventative maintenance.
* Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and requests at one time.
* Must have strong customer interface skills and the ability to effectively communicate with department leaders; strong documentation and/or technical writing skills are required.
* Automation of database maintenance and monitoring processes. Candidate should have an understanding of high-availability solutions, cluster technologies, server administration and SAN storage principles.
