Design Manager will be responsible for managing the conceptualization and creation of effective designs for assigned projects. Manage and direct outside design studios and/or internal design team to establish design "look" for project including all prototype stages. Design Manager could manage entire project from conception to production, (Pupil or Teacher editions) and it's derivative projects (such as Big Books, Posters, Covers, etc) reporting directly to Executive Design Manager or Creative Director.

Experience: Supervise and direct team in all phases of design. Manage internal or external design teams to ensure MMH standard and meet deadlines and budget constraints.
Keep current with new design solutions, stay informed of the school textbook market, including the competitors creative approaches.
Keep superiors constantly aware of changes either in content or design that affect scope, schedule or look of project.
Assist manager in budget tracking. Self-manage time to keep project on time and on budget.
Work with art buyer and photo researcher to establish art and photo styles for approval by Senior team.
Understand art/design budgets as they apply to specific assigned projects.
Coordinate with editorial team and design team to conceptualize ideas and ensure proper visual content.
Communicate efficiently with production to establish workflow schedules. Ensure direct reports understand internal design process and follow procedures.
Process work schedules and establish internal workflow to ensure timely completion of such. Work with Senior Design Managers to maintain tracking of entire job and all it's derivative pieces.
Work with Sr. Designer and/or other designers to ensure correct file management and organization.
Supervise the review and correction of page proofs at every stage of design and production. Attend press checks as necessary.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of schoolbook market (minimum 3 years) and sense for designing for publishing.
Good communication and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively under pressure is essential.
Must show good project and people management as position require some team leadership skills.
Proficiency in publishing computer programs: InDesign 2, Illustrator, Photoshop
