This is a fully competent position in which the incumbent works under close supervision to apply a broad working knowledge of computing/operating systems concepts, practices, and procedures to moderately complex assignments, equipment, and/or operating environments according to established procedures. Operates monitors and controls mainframe, mini-computer consoles, associated communications systems, and peripheral equipment, including processors, tape/disk drives and printers. May also assist Help Desk in resolving and reporting operations problems.
REPRESENTATIVE PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures all necessary data files are accounted for and available in order to initiate each processing task. May perform required equipment set-up. Operates stand-alone and attached equipment to complete each processing task. Monitors progress. Operates equipment to perform tasks and monitors database systems in accordance with a schedule of operations.
- Identifies systems hardware and software malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action as necessary to troubleshoot/resolve operating problems referring to established procedures and/or escalates problems to more experienced personnel within the department.
- Responds to requests from systems and applications software and hardware support personnel and users for operations assistance.
- Checks for outstanding replies for bringing tape drives on/off-line or tape error alerts; maintains scheduled reports of operations activities including trouble reports, logs, etc. Maintains daily logs, turnovers, and equipment malfunction reports.
- Responds to requests from systems and applications software and hardware support personnel and users for operations assistance as needed.
- Maintains inventory of expendable supplies and may restock paper, printer ribbons, etc. Demonstrates knowledge of the daily operation and monitoring of the mainframe or mid-platform.
EDUCATION AND TYPICAL YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or equivalency plus specialized training or an Associate degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
2 or more years of Data Center operations experience. 3-5 years progressively more responsible computer operations experience, demonstrating familiarity with a broad range of medium and large-scale computer systems, platforms, peripherals and standard operating procedures, including knowledge of scheduling and job processing languages.
12 hour shift 7:30pm - 7:30am
JCL's and mainframe experience preferred.
