A DBA is responsible for the planning, development and maintenance of a database or a set of databases. There are different types of DBA: Application/Development DBA and Production/Operations DBA. This job description is concerned only with the applications / development DBA.
The Application / Development DBA works extensively with the Applications Development team, to ensure accuracy of data descriptions, simplicity and elegance of database design, appropriateness of database design to business processes, uniqueness of data, optimum performance of databases and queries, and creation and maintenance of appropriate indexes and partitions. The Development DBA is tightly coupled with the developers of a project. This may include projects that use Analysis Services, where the DBA has to create the cubes and the ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) process, often performed by SSIS

Experience: Qualified candidates must possess a minimum of 5 years experience in programming, systems administration, and/or database administration. Experience must include the following: 3 years of hands-on designing, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting applications running on a MS-SQL server; 2 years experience with data modeling database design and development or administration; 2 years experience working in a Windows NT or UNIX environment as a LAN Administrator, developer or DBA. The ability to install, configure and optimize MS-SQL Server is necessary. Knowledge of Windows NT and/or UNIX and networking. Excellent multi- tasking, project management, trouble-shooting, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills are required. Proficiency with the relevant software tools (project management, graphics/modeling is essential.
